Care Home Resident Devika

Devika is a proud Muslim woman who is supported in the home to continue practising her faith. Carers assist her in attending prayers, and female staff members support her with personal care, including helping her to adjust her hijab in a respectful and dignified way.

Before moving into care, Devika worked as a GP and had a lifelong passion for looking after others. One of her greatest joys was cooking for her family, and food has always played an important role in her life. She continues to enjoy flavourful meals, and her sons and daughters regularly bring in home-cooked dishes for her. Due to her dementia, Devika now finds communication difficult, but at times she is able to respond with a quiet, raspy “yes” when asked simple questions, such as whether she is enjoying her food.
Devika experiences ongoing oral health issues, including inflamed gums and recurrent tooth infections, which can cause her discomfort. Both the care home and her family have faced challenges accessing dental services for her. In the meantime, the care team focuses on managing her pain, supporting her comfort, and maintaining her dignity while working towards suitable and affordable treatment.
